Casting from Nature

A little secret about me. Despite being artistic I'm not very good at drawing - I've always felt much more natural with three dimensional objects.

 

That is probably the reason 'lost wax' carving and casting is my favourite jewellery technique - sculpture making on a tiny scale!

Creating rings and other jewellery from a wax model is a process that 'officially' began around 5000 years ago.  Today's tools and equipment have moved on but essentially the technique is the same - carve or cast a wax model, cover in plaster, heat and melt out the wax, pour in molten metal.

​

I use this technique to make models of real twigs or leaves or carve free hand shapes which are then cast in silver or gold.
